Congratulations to Mike Calvin for winning his 7th SSO title at Galaxy Lanes in Grand Blanc. Calvin defeated Gary Duarard 228- 192 in the title match. Congratulations to Troy Stus on his 5th SSO title held at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights. This was our SSO Grand Final which drew 115 bowlers looking to bring home the winner’s share of $2,000! Stus defeated Bob DeCheney Jr. 247-241 in the championship match to bring home the title. Ironically Troy’s last win was right here at Astro Lanes, also in the Grand Finals. The 5-man stepladder featured top seed Stus, 2nd seed DeCheney, 3rd seed Jeff Austreng, 4th seed Eddie Mintz and 5th seed, last year’s Grand Finals winner Jerry Sikora.
In the first match, Sikora beat Mintz 214-204 in a tight match. Sikora cruised past Austreng 227-166 as Jeff couldn’t figure out the championship pair. Sikora then ran into DeCheney who figured out the pair early and often for a hard fought 259-235 victory. DeCheney then met Stus in the championship match. Bob started slow in the match, with two spares and an open in the first 3 frames while Stus struck in 6 of the first 7 frames. DeCheney made it a match, throwing a 7-bagger before leaving the 3-6-10 in the second ball in the 10th for 241. Stus then struck in the first ball in the 10th to seal the victory.
During qualifying, Gerald Johnson led the way with an impressive 1472, followed by Joe Ciach with 1463, and Joe Krajenke with 1454. The only honor score was 300 in game 5 of qualifying by Steve Boos. The field averaged 214 during the 6 came qualifying.
The cut to make the top 46 was 1318 (John Jones II). Our extras out of the cut to move on in the elimination rounds were Marty Sanders (1315) and Jim Grant (1309) in the senior division (50+); Mike Bosco (1309), Terry Dockery (1305), Mike McCleskey (1296), Ron Bettin (1291), Mostafa Nejatabakhsh (1285), and Keith Engling (1280) from the super senior division (60+), and Larry Wilson (1307), Alan Tone (1301), Mike Lucente (1288) and Tony Stipcak (1284) via the super-super senior division (70+). Welcome to the winner's circle Larry Salvati! Larry won his first SSO title at 5 Star Lanes in Sterling Heights by defeating Todd Pawlak (also looking for his first title) 249-237. The championship match was neck and neck the whole way. Pawlak missed a 10 pin late, while Salvati struck out from the 9th frame on to finish with 249. Pawlak still had a chance to win getting up in the 10th, however, a pesky 7 pin stood on his first shot allowing Salvati to earn the victory. Salvati received $1,100 for his win, while Pawlak settled for $600 with his 2nd place finish.
Thank you bowlers for all of your support in 2024! We were moving close to a record with 130 bowlers vying for the title at 5 Star.
During qualifying, Jeff Austreng attempted to set a twelve-year-old qualifying record with games of 228, 300, 299, 289, 234, 243 for 1593. That is 15 pins short of the astounding score of 1608 set by our all-time title holder Gerald Johnson (26) back at Merri Bowl Lanes in September of 2012. Unbelievably, Austreng was not the leader after 3 games - Pete Kaczmarczyk came out of the gate with games of 290, 279, 268 for an impressive 837 series. Other 300 games include Amy Stolz, Steve Sharp, Jerry Sikora, and Todd Baker.
The cut to make the top 32 was 1358 (Amy Stolz). Our extras out of the cut to move on in the elimination rounds were Edd Smith (1356) in the senior division (50+); Jim Magolan (1357), tournament winner Larry Salvati (1351), Rick Wayne (1341), Peter Senf (1340), Eddie Mintz (1332), Rick Bertrand (1331) and Gary Marshall (1315) from the super senior division (60+), and Dan Mayer (1345), Ron Burgess (1318), Anthony King (1298) and Dave Bernhardt (1270) via the super-super senior division (70+).
